It is set in 10th-century England and continues to follow the fortunes of the fictional Uhtred of Bebbanburg. This novel begins with his investigating the murder of fishermen under his protection. A study of the authenticity of the sermons has been prepared by Clare Stancliffe (Durham) and should appear shortly in a volume on Columbanus under the editorship of Michael Lapidge.
